How to find deals on mattresses

Mattresses are the most aggressive discount category in retail outside of cars. Stores routinely cut 30-50% off MSRP on holiday weekends — Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, and Presidents Day are the four windows where MSRP becomes a fiction.

1. Buy on a holiday weekend

Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Presidents Day. Every major retailer (Casper, Purple, Saatva, Tuft & Needle, Helix, Mattress Firm, Macy's) runs the year's deepest mattress discounts these weekends. The MSRP between sales is theater.

2. Use the 100-night trial

Every bed-in-a-box brand (Casper, Purple, Saatva, Leesa, Tuft & Needle, Helix) offers 100+ nights of free returns. If the bed doesn't work after 30 nights of real sleep, ship it back, get a refund, try another. The trial is a real consumer-protection feature; use it without guilt.

3. Skip the showroom delivery surcharge

Brick-and-mortar mattress stores (Mattress Firm, Sleep Number) charge $150-300 for white-glove delivery + old-mattress removal. The bed-in-a-box brands ship free + the box is small enough that you can move it yourself. Old mattress: your county usually has a free curbside-pickup service.
